Many people helped me collect and photograph the fishes portrayed in this website. Their direct aid in the field, generosity of time and information, and general enthusiasm for what I was attempting is what made this project a success. I’m extremely grateful to everyone involved.
Two people deserve to be singled out. Dr. Phil Cochran, formerly a professor at St. Norbert College in DePere, WI, and now a professor at St. Marys University, Winona, MN, has been my longest and closest collaborator, and he has been involved in countless fish collecting expeditions and associated hi-jinks with me. His encyclopedic knowledge of natural history in general and fishes in particular, his unfaltering support and interest, and his eclectic musical tastes helped get the whole project off the ground and kept me going at several points when the effort seemed overwhelming. Dr. Kyle Piller, originally a Ph.D. student at Tulane University, New Orleans, LA, then a post-doc with me through the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and now a continuing collaborator as a professor at Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond, LA, was my main sampling and photography companion during the majority of the work. His intelligence enlivened many a long drive, and his detailed knowledge of fish distribution, habitats, and sampling techniques was essential to the project. His talents as a “hand model” are evident throughout the website.
For administrative support, I am particularly grateful to:
Ed Emmons, WDNR
Jim Kitchell, University of Wisconsin-Madison
Several people contributed photographs that I was either unable to get on my own or were better than any that I took:
Mary Botzet – formerly WDNR, common carp
Tom Burzynski – WDNR, rainbow trout
Gary Fandrei – Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association, Alaska, pink salmon, sockeye (kokanee) salmon
Kevin Fassbind – formerly WDNR, goldfish
Rick Focht – Douglas Island Pink and Chum, Inc., Alaska, pink salmon, sockeye (kokanee) salmon
Mike Kaminski – formerly WDNR, stonecat, Chinook salmon, northern pike
Paul Kanehl – WDNR, quillback
Paul Peeters – WDNR, longnose sucker, lake whitefish, coho salmon, Chinook salmon, pumpkinseed
Kyle Piller – formerly UW-Madison, chestnut lamprey, redside dace, Atlantic salmon
Karl Scheidegger – WDNR, brook stickleback
Gary Tomlinson – Alliant Energy, Wisconsin, white bass X striped bass hybrid
Martha Wessels – formerly WDNR, bigmouth buffalo, spotted sucker
I am indebted to the many people who collected and sent me specimens to photograph, arranged for me to accompany them on sampling trips so that I could photograph specimens, or provided detailed locality information so that I could collect particular species myself. Undoubtedly I’ve forgotten some people, and to them, I apologize. Their assistance was no less valuable because it’s temporarily escaped my cluttered brain. Those that I do remember:

Many, many people, too numerous to list, helped me collect fishes for photography during my own sampling expeditions. You know who you are, and I thank you.
Funding for the field work and photography was provided in part by a Technology and Learning Grant from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Federal Aid in Fish Restoration Program, Project F-95-P, Study SSOT.
